More than 1/4 of modern medicines originate from tropical forest plants. 13 million hectares or 32.5 million acres (roughly the size of NY State) of forest continue to be lost per year. CO2 emissions that origin from deforestation are not negligent and should be really treated the same as industrial CO2 emissions. This phenomenon can occur at the generational level, where knowledge is lost because younger generations are not “aware of past biological conditions” and on the individual level, where people “forget their own experiences” (Papworth et al. 2009).

Information on soil moisture capacity to influence the climate is basic; e.g., one simulation of the climate, circa 1992, has been criticized as "highly simplified" for reasons including that, in addition to ignoring the vital role played by vegetation, it also assumes that soil moisture is uniform across the globe (Wood et al, 1992). These can be as little as 1 metre in height, while some bush trees need to be permanently staked and their branches strung up because they cannot support themselves.

They are proud and happy when they learn that lemurs only live in Madagascar. By the 1980s, ∼38% of Australia’s forests had been severely modified by clearing ( Wells et al. 1984 ), and by 1995, Australia had the lowest total area of remaining closed forests (4.6% of her land mass) relative to 15 countries investigated ( Singh et al. 2001; Fig. 2 ). Coffee, chocolate, bananas, mangoes, papayas, avocados and sugar cane all originally came from tropical rainforests, and are still mostly grown on plantations in regions that were formerly primary forest.
